If Apple Uses IGZO Displays In 2013, We May See Thinner iOS Devices

A big problem people had with the third generation iPad was its size. Apple somehow managed to release a product that was actually a bit thicker than the iPad 2. This was due to the Retina display integrated on the new old iPad. Pushing that many pixels requires a bigger battery and it made the device a tad bit thicker.

According to DigiTimes, Apple plans the integrated thinner and light IGZO displays across its iOS lines. Doing this would allow them to make the already thin devices thinner due to the size and low power consumption of Sharp’s IGZO display technology.

DigiTimes reports:

The sources said Apple is in further discussions with Sharp over IGZO panel production capacity estimates for 2013 and is also inquiring about whether AU Optronics’ (AUO) L5C line could be used to produce the technology.

Having IGZO displays would highly benefit the end user. As PCWorld notes, these displays would have low power consumption, increased touch sensitivity, and a higher pixel density:

This difference in current flow inside the screen also means that transistors don’t have to be continually refreshed when a still image is on the screen. That leads to lower power consumption and, for touch panels, much less interference from the screen’s electronics so the touch panel becomes more accurate and sensitive, said Nobuhiro Okan, a manager with Sharp’s display device group.

The iPad would benefit the most from this technology. I don’t think I could handle an iPhone that’s thinner than the current iPhone 5. Give me a thin and sleek iPad with an iPad mini design and I’ll be happy.
