Brazilian Smartphone Company Launches Android Powered ‘iPhone’ Brand

IGB Electronica SA in Brazil is launching a new line of Android powered smartphones. They have decided to name the line iPhone. How can they do this? Because they own the IPHONE brand trademark which they applied for in Brazil in 2000.

Reuters reports:

The first model will be called “Neo One,” IGB said in a securities filing. The company was formed this year after the restructuring of Gradiente Eletronica SA, which had applied for exclusive rights in Brazil to register its products under the name IPHONE in 2000.

What will Apple do about this? Well, they will have to settle with this company. I personally think that’s the main reason IGB decided to launch these phones.

Apple has to settle with Proview in China for the iPad trademark. Sure, IGB owns the legal rights to the name, but I think they’re just grabbing for money right now.
