Apple’s 5th Avenue Store Sells 13,000 iPads in 12 hours

Earlier this morning Tim Cook said that Apple sold iPads in record numbers this weekend.  What those exact numbers are we don’t know yet. We do know however, that AT&T reported record iPad activations last Friday on the product’s launch day.

Now a new report has surfaces saying that Apple’s 5th Avenue flagship retail store in New York city sold an astounding 13,000 iPads in 12 hours last Friday.  That equals out an average of 18 iPads a minute!

According to The Verge:

Here’s what we’re hearing: within the first 12 hours of the iPad’s launch — between 8AM and 8PM local time — the store sold over 13,000 new iPads, an average of about 18 per minute. Daily store revenue, which typically falls between $700,000 to $1 million this quarter, was up to $11.5 million on launch day. On the supply side, the Fifth Avenue store had more iPads out of any store in the US — not surprising at all given its landmark status, but also partly in reaction to last year’s iPad 2 launch, where they were selling out faster than employees could open boxes. While we don’t have a model-by-model breakdown, we do know the 4G models are selling at a better-than-expected rate, while Wi-Fi models have been more readily available.

The average larger profile Apple Store averaged about 1000 new iPads sold on launch day, so it’s not beyond the realm of imagination that the 5th Avenue store(which has 100’s of employees, and a much larger customer base) could sell over ten times the amount of the average store.

The cool thing about all of this is that Apple is selling new iPad’s in record numbers but they seem to have gotten their supply chain running much better this time as most customers can still walk in to most Apple stores and pick up the new iPad.
